Information for cyclists

Who can use the cycle paths?

Many paths in Lee Valley Regional Park are shared use paths, provided for walkers, dog walkers, cyclists, anglers and joggers to enjoy. Most are well surfaced and suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs. All cycle routes are suitable for recreational cycling but not for fast journeys or large groups of cyclists.

British Waterways Towpaths

There is no general public right of way for cyclists on the towpath, but a permit to cycle can be obtained free of charge. Information can be obtained from British Waterways Customer Services 01923 201 120.

Cyclists Code of Conduct

  • Always give way to pedestrians on shared use paths
  • Ensure your bike is safe to use
  • Do not expect to use paths for high speed travel
  • Always follow the highway code
  • Be considerate and courteous to all users. Remember some people may have hearing or sight impairments
  • Carry a bell and use it, or say excuse me as you approach all other users
  • Shared use paths are not suitable for cycling in larger groups than eight
  • Ride in single file, especially around bends and where the path is narrow
  • Slow down at path junctions, bridges and bends

Our London 2012 Games Legacy - the VeloPark

During the London 2012 Games the VeloPark will host Track Cycling, Paralympic Track Cycling and the BMX events, while Hadleigh Farm in Essex will host the Mountain Bike events. Lee Valley Regional Park Authority will own, fund and manage the VeloPark after the Games and will open it to the public soon after. A road cycle circuit and mountain bike course will be added, attracting cyclists from all disciplines. It will become a cycling hub for the community, where school children, clubs, groups and elite riders from across the region can train, race or simply cycle for fun. More >
