The rich history of the site and the architecture of Waltham Abbey was the inspiration for ‘Illumination’. The geometric simplicity of the Abbey rose window became the core of the design and the illuminated manuscripts of the medieval monks influenced the development of the symbols and text which constitute the directional signage.

The symbols were devised by a design team selected from pupils at King Harold’s School during a series of collaborative workshops and site visits. The team both designed and made the moulding blocks which were used to manufacture the terrazzo. The stainless steel rings incorporate my interpretation of a design produced in the workshops and are hand engraved.
