Science

Scientific methods made British gunpowder the envy of the world. From the development of Congreve’s rocket in the 1800’s to the Bouncing Bomb in the 1940’s, the Royal Gunpowder Mills have always been at the centre of scientific research. Eventually becoming a centre for research and development, work carried out here was at the cutting edge of non-nuclear explosives technology.

Nature

Historical structures and canals combine with extensive wooded areas, creating a hidden world with a thriving ecology. Visitors are free to explore a large area of the site unguided, including the wildlife watch tower with panoramic views. On our non-events weekends, come and enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful location. Two thirds of the site are protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and guided land train tours of these areas are available.
