Dragonfly

A feast for the eyes. This is the single best place to see dragonflies in Greater London, Essex and Hertfordshire. Visit the site between May and September and you could see up to 23 different types, that’s over half of Britain’s native species on this SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) site. A Tree Park, once the Greater London Council’s Arboretum is next to the Sanctuary and you can walk along the Meridian Line during your visit.

Access on Site

Most of the site is open for pedestrain access at all times, but fields in the centre of the site (marked by signs) are a wildlife refuge with no public access.

Location information

River Lee Country Park

From the M25, exit at junction 26 and join the A121. At the roundabout, turn right which will take you over a bridge spanning the M25. At the second set of traffic lights, approach in the left hand lane and go straight on. At the third set of lights move into the right hand lane and go straight on. At the roundabout, take the first left which will take you into the car park for Abbey Gardens.

Alternatively, take the third exit at this roundabout, along the Crooked Mile (B194 towards Harlow), there is also a small car park with a height barrier (restriction of 2 metres) just after the Wheatsheaf Pub.
