Introduction
Rammey Marsh is located in the London Borough of Enfield to the east of Enfield town and on the boundary of Mollison Avenue to the west, the M25 to the north, Lea Navigation to the east and Smeaton Road to the south.
Background
Historically the northern part of Rammey Marsh was given over to gravel extraction but has since been backfilled and further modified as a result of construction of the M25 motorway.
The Marsh forms part of the Lee Valley Regional Park Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation in London.
Rammey Marsh West, owned and managed by LVRPA, acquired 1993; Rammey Marsh East owned and managed by LVRPA, acquired 1969.
Special Features
On Rammey Marsh East some 225 plant species have been recorded with the aquatic marsh flora and down-land type flora being the most significant. Rammey Marsh is also home to a large Bee Orchid (Orchis apifera) colony.
A population of Water Voles exist in the Small River Lea and two species of Pipistrelle Bat occur in large willows in this area.
Site Information
Working with Volunteers to carry out survey work on the Bee Orchids found on site.
Management work to continue along the ditch line to increase the Water Vole habitat.
Accessibility
At present no entrances onto site are easily accessible by wheelchairs and all pathways are mown grass .
Site Management
The site is used in the main as informal recreation and has short mown pathways to facilitate informal recreation, principally walking and dog walking.
