Chingford Reservoirs (Lea Valley Road, Edmonton, London)
The lower Lee Valley is dominated by two huge storage reservoirs, namely the King George V and William Girling Reservoirs. They are known together as the Chingford Reservoirs and are owned by Thames Water. This site has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to the bird populations which the Reservoirs support. Public access is only allowed to the King George V Reservoir (North and South basin) and a permit must be obtained from Thames Water. Details of access and car parking arrangements are given on the permit, children under 8 and dogs are not allowed on site.
Walthamstow Reservoirs (Forest Road, Tottenham, London)
Walthamstow Reservoirs are owned and managed by Thames Water and consist of ten shallow basins with some wooded islands. The Reservoirs are bordered with grassland, scrub and by Walthamstow Marsh to the south. This site has also been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its bird population. Two of the islands have been modified especially for birds by removing trees and scrub and creating wader scrapes. A site management plan has been developed to take account of the needs of birdwatching, recreational and angling interests on site. Access is by permit only, children under 8 and dogs are not allowed on the site.
