Stanstead Abbotts is sited within a mile of the confluence of the Rivers Lee and Stort in the Hertfordshire countryside and has operated as a boatyard since the end of the Second World War.
During the 1950’s and 60’s the yard was highly productive and had a reputation for building small fast motor cruisers, yachts and a British Waterways hire fleet in plywood and later in glass-reinforced plastic(GRP).
The Lee & Stort Cruising Club was founded at the yard in or around 1950. The yard was purchased by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority in 1970 and has developed into a boatyard/marina having 200 berths.
