Noctule Bat
Noctule Bat
A generic action plan for bats in the Lee Valley was launched in 2002 with the aim of furthering our understanding of bats within the Regional Park and identifying measures to enhance their populations. Since then a programme of surveys have been initiated to assess the distribution of bat species throughout the Regional Park. The team have also carried out renovations of old military pill boxes to provide shelters for bats and put up bat boxes in woodland areas where natural cavities were in short supply.

Many bat species are sensitive to light pollution and maintaining unlit corridors of suitable habitat is an essential part of bat conservation.
Anybody can become involved in surveying bats and even making small changes in and around their homes to benefit bats. Information is available from the Bat Conservation Trust website http://www.bats.org.uk/

Different bat species specialise in feeding in different areas. Look low over lakes and rivers for feeding Daubentons or along woodland edges and hedgerows for Pipistrelles.
