Bittern
The Bittern is one of Britain’s rarest birds. It lives in reedbeds where its diet consists largely of fish. Their historical decline was caused largely by the loss of reedbed habitat through drainage. The Regional Park is important as it supports approximately 10% of the UK winter population. Work being carried out by the Hertfordshire and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, RSPB and the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority hopes to see the realisation of the BAP target of a breeding pair by 2010.
