Concept design for the inside of the Velodrome during the Games
ISG InteriorExterior has won the contract for the velodrome, meaning UK firms are now contracted to build the three major sporting venues in the Olympic Park.
The 6,000-seat velodrome will be in the north of the Olympic Park, within Lee Valley Regional Park.During the Games it will host Olympic and Paralympic Track Cycling events, alongside a track for Olympic BMX events.
The facilities will be converted for use after the Games. A road cycling circuit and mountain bike course will be added to create a VeloPark, combining facilities for all cycling disciplines in one ‘hub’.
The Velodrome will be delivered within the overall VeloPark budget, which was confirmed by the ODA last month as £80m. This budget includes the Velodrome, BMX track, and the costs of the conversions and the new developments after the Games.
The designs for the VeloPark after the Games are due to be unveiled this summer, following consultation with cycling user groups and British Cycling.
ISG InteriorExterior will then work with the VeloPark design consortium to develop the detailed designs ahead of construction, which is due to start on site in early 2009.
Shaun Dawson, Chief Executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority which will own and operate the VeloPark in legacy, said:
“We are delighted that this contract has now been awarded and that the exciting Velodrome designs will soon become a reality. When complete, the Velodrome, as part of the bigger VeloPark complex, will be a world class, accessible sporting facility for both the London 2012 Games and beyond.”
