Lee Valley Regional Park opened the Stock Pit at Stanstead Abbotts on Friday 19 March, with Charles Walker, MP for Broxbourne being the very first to fish the water.

The Stock Pit is a gravel pit in the Stanstead Abbotts, Marsh Lane Fishery, acquired by Lee Valley Regional Park in 1998 (leased and run as a fishery by RMC Angling, part of the Ready Mixed Concrete group taken over by CEMEX).

The Stock Pit suffered severe oxygenation problems and was handed back to the Regional Park in 2007. The Fisheries Team has completed vital restoration work including tree pollarding, the creation of habitat piles, two major Siltex applications and the rebuilding of eight double swims and a boardwalk linking them together, creating two swims that are suitable for use by anglers with disabilities.

Charles Walker MP said “’I’m delighted to be able to officially open Stock Pit, Lee Valley Regional Park’s new fishery. It is a superb venue and a credit to the Authorities Fisheries Team and volunteers. I am sure that it will be used and enjoyed by my constituents and people from across the region alike.’’

At just under two acres in size, this picturesque and mature gravel pit has been opened as a Day-Night Ticket fishery as part of Lee Valley Regional Parks portfolio of venues for anglers.

The Lake’s stock of approximately 20 original 20-30lb+ Carp have been complemented by 44 fast growing Fishers Pond strain Mirrors up to 21lb in weight, these will be followed shortly by 26 Scaley mirrors from the Fisheries Carp Rearing facility, averaging approximately 10lbs in weight.
