Job of a lifetime up for grabs at White Water Canoe Centre

Date Published: 11/09/2009

It is probably one of the top sports and leisure jobs in the country – Manager of the White Water Canoe Centre in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. The venue will host the canoe slalom events during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

As the only brand new London 2012 venue to open to the public before the Games, the search has started for a manager capable of launching this world class venue and setting it up as a leading white water attraction, opening in spring 2011.

The candidate will be an experienced leisure operator who can manage the opening of the centre and introduce programmes allowing elite athletes to compete and train in the venue, alongside less experienced paddlers, and operate a commercial white water rafting operation.

During the London 2012 Games, the manager will then liaise closely with the London 2012 Organising Committee who will oversee the planning, organisation and management of Olympic events at the White Water Canoe Centre.

Shaun Dawson, Chief Executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority said “This is without doubt one of the most exciting and high profile jobs available in the industry right now. When the White Water Canoe Centre opens to the public in Spring 2011 the world will be watching.

In addition to providing a facility for the four days of intense competition during the London 2012 Games, it will become a magnet for canoeists and anyone who wants to try white water rafting.”

Following the Games, the centre will become a sporting and leisure venue for canoeing and white-water rafting, as well as a major competition and training venue for elite events. Lee Valley Regional Park is expecting over 70,000 visitors per year, with many taking up the challenge of white water rafting.

Lee Valley Regional Park is London’s biggest open space – a 10,000 acre, 26 mile long park made up of award-winning nature reserves and sports venues. The White Water Canoe Centre is one of three London 2012 venues that it will own, fund and operate following the Games.
