Lee Valley Regional Park Authority has been granted a coveted Inspire Mark for its action packed Paddle and Pedal event which will take place on Wednesday 4 August 2010, 11am – 4pm at Tottenham Marshes.
The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Inspire Mark is awarded only to the most accessible, participative, inspiring and stimulating projects and events across sport, culture, education, environment, volunteering and business.
Paddle and Pedal is a new addition to Lee Valley Regional Park’s events programme. With the Lee Valley White Water Centre opening to the public in April 2011 – the only brand new London 2012 venue to open to the public ahead of the Games – this event is the perfect opportunity for visitors to try their hand at canoeing. As the owners and managers of the Centre in legacy, Lee Valley Regional Park will ensure that this world class venue can be enjoyed by everyone from school children to local clubs, elite athletes to complete beginners, from local communities and the region.
Other free family activities on the day will include cycle rides, with free cycle hire from Lee Valley Canoe and Cycle which is based at Tottenham Marshes, offering cycle hire seven days a week. Lee Valley Regional Park offers a range of cycling events and opportunities throughout the 10,000 acre Park and will own and manage the London 2012 VeloPark in legacy. The Authority will ensure that this first rate centre is truly world class, welcoming cyclists of all levels and disciplines to train, race or simply cycle for fun all year round. After the Games, a road cycle circuit and mountain bike course will be added to the Velodrome and BMX circuit to create a legacy VeloPark that will combine cycling facilities across all disciplines in one cycling ‘hub’.
Families will also be entertained by orienteering, minibeast hunting, treasure hunts and arts and crafts, all taking place on the 100 acre Marshes, which is made up of a mosaic of trees, shrubs, grassland and waterways.
Seb Coe, Chair, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: “We want to use the power of the Games to inspire change. The Inspire programme is recognising the work our partners all round the UK are doing to help us achieve this vision now – three years out from the start of the Games. I congratulate everyone involved in Paddle and Pedal for securing the Inspire mark and wish you every success with your work.”
Located on the borders of Haringey and Waltham Forest, Tottenham Marshes is made up of three main areas, Clendish Marsh, Wild Marsh West and Wild Marsh East. The area is perfect for walking, running, cycling and discovering the wide range of plants and animals which live on the Marshes.
Tottenham Marshes is just one of the stunning open spaces which make up Lee Valley Regional Park. The Park’s 10,000 acres comprise a unique mix of heritage sites, gardens, nature reserves, riverside trails, wide open spaces and world-class sporting facilities.
