Over 200 Brownies from the Girlguiding South East Herts Division descended on the historic Waltham Abbey Gardens, on Sunday 13 June as part of the Big Brownie Takeover celebrating 100 years of Girlguiding.

Lee Valley Regional Park Youth and Schools team hosted a day of fun and educational activities in the Gardens, including mini-beast hunting, pond dipping, learning about dragonflies and competing in a Cunning Running Orienteering Course on Cornmill Meadows.

Waltham Abbey Gardens, reputed burial place of King Harold, is just one of the free heritage and countryside attractions within the Waltham Abbey area, including the Church, Cornmill Meadows Dragonfly Sanctuary and Tree Park.

Julie Grant, Youth and Schools Tutor said, “The Big Brownie Takeover was a busy and fun day for all involved.  It was great to see how enthusiastic and involved the girls were about each of the activities. It was quite a sight to see 210 Brownies standing in a circle holding hands.”

The Youth and Schools service host a range of activities throughout the year, helping teachers, lecturers and youth group leaders utilise Lee Valley Regional Park’s huge potential as a conservation and countryside educational resource.
