The Newham and Essex Beagles celebrated a multitude of accolades as they won the 2010 British League Match last weekend (Saturday 21 August) at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre (LVAC).

Not only did they retain their title of the UK’s top men’s club for the second consecutive year but Matt Roberts broke LVAC’s stadium record for the high jump at 2.26 metres. Matt’s result places him fourth in the UK rankings for the season. He was one of many Beagles that set new records at LVAC on the day.

The event was hosted by Enfield and Haringey Athletics Club at the state of the art Lee Valley Athletics Centre in Edmonton and saw competitors from across the country battling it out in a range of disciplines including 100m, 200m, 800m, long jump, discus, shot putt and javelin.

Lee Valley Athletics Centre is the largest indoor and outdoor athletics centre, serving London and the South of England and home to three of the four British track and field medallists at the Beijing Olympics. It is part of the 26 mile long, 10,000 acre Lee Valley Regional Park which offers a unique combination of world class sporting facilities, open green spaces, heritage sites and nature reserves.

Brian Hopkins, Duty Manager at LVAC, said: “The British League Match was a fantastic competition to watch and proved great results for the Newham and Essex Beagles.

“All teams performed brilliantly despite the windy conditions on the day which made outside track events difficult. It was a particularly successful event as 13 new stadium records were set throughout the competition.”

The club scored 417 points in total, beating their previous club record of 399. This is the fourth highest in the league’s history.

Further LVAC track records broken at the event by the Newham and Essex Beagles were:

Notes to Editors

Lee Valley Regional Park stretches 26 miles along the River Lee from Ware in Hertfordshire to East India Dock Basin on the Thames. The Park’s 10,000 acres comprise a diverse mix of heritage sites, nature reserves and open green spaces alongside world class sports facilities, attracting over 4 million visitors every year.

The Lee Valley Athletics Centre is National Performance Centre for UK Athletics and is used by 22% of all UK athletes in receipt of Lottery Funding. It is home to three of the four British track and field medallists from the Beijing Olympics, including gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu.

LVAC has recently laid an exact replica of the Mondo FX track that will be used in the Olympic Stadium in 2012. The super fast track is currently installed in only ten stadia around the world and the UK’s two National Performance Centres will be the only training centres in the world with this track installed, giving LVAC’s athletes considerable advantage in their training and preparation for London 2012 or local, regional or national events.

Lee Valley Regional Park is playing an active part in the London 2012 Games. The Lee Valley White Water Centre (just north of the M25, near Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire) and the VeloPark and Hockey and Tennis Centres in Olympic Park will be owned, managed and funded by Lee Valley Regional Park in legacy. They join our existing sports facilities which include Lee Valley’s Athletics Centre, Riding Centre and Ice Centre to create a chain of sporting excellence across the region.
