This year, Breast Cancer Campaign’s women-only cycle ride, Pedal it Pink, is coming to a town near you! On Sunday 28 March, River Lee Country Park will host the event, which hopes to attract hundreds of ladies from across the South East.

Alex Adames, from Harpenden, Hertfordshire is supporting Lee Valley’s Pedal it Pink after her father, George, died from breast cancer 15 years ago. She said: “Most people associate breast cancer with women so it was a total shock to discover my dad had been diagnosed with this disease. Despite putting up a strong fight for seven years, he sadly passed away in December 1994 and now I want to do all I can to support breast cancer awareness.”

Pedal it Pink, sponsored by Santander, has three ride routes for you to choose between: a full marathon (26.2miles), half marathon (13.1miles) or 5k family lap, which partners and children can join in. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for both beginners and experienced cyclists.

Over 6,400 women and 40 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the South East and approximately a quarter of these cases will unfortunately be fatal. Alex continued, “I think Pedal it Pink is a fantastic event to raise money for research and I hope lots of women in the South East will enjoy taking part to help put the brakes on breast cancer. Not only that but the 5k family lap is a great way to involve men and hopefully encourage them to check themselves for lumps too - it’s not only women who can get this disease.”

Entries for the first South East Pedal it Pink are now open. Entry to the full marathon is £15, half marathon £10, and the 5k family lap just £5.

Samantha Gold, Senior Events Manager at Breast Cancer Campaign, said: “We’re so pleased to launch Pedal it Pink in the South East and hope that lots of women in the region will take up this unique challenge and contribute to a great cause. The first two Pedal it Pink’s have gone so well and we have raised over £100,000 so far! So come on

ladies, dig out your bike, find your pinkest outfit and take part in this fun cycling adventure while raising money for charity.”

Lee Valley Regional Park Chief Executive Shaun Dawson said “Lee Valley Regional Park looks forward to hosting the South East’s first Pedal it Pink in the beautiful surroundings of the River Lee Country Park. The Park lends itself perfectly to this event with a safe and traffic-free course winding past rivers, woodlands and lakes. The Park provides excellent cycling routes throughout and has established strong links with cycling over many years, we will also own, fund and manage London 2012’s Velopark in legacy. We regularly host a number of fundraising events across the Park and are thrilled to support the Breast Cancer Campaign and help raise funds for this worthy cause.”
