Work in our award-winning renowned gardens near Enfield.

35 hours per week – Monday to Friday with weekend rota

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Kitchen Gardener to assist the Head Gardener and the gardens team in the maintenance and development of the historical gardens created by plantsman E.A. Bowles. The eight acres of gardens feature glasshouses, meadows, rock garden, the famous “Lunatic Asylum” and are home to several National Collections. In 2011 a newly restored garden was unveiled to the public, following a two year Heritage Lottery Fund enabled project. Now in its third decade, Bowles’ garden continues to be restored in his unique style.

Your role will be to supervise the day-to-day running of the Victorian kitchen garden including perennial vegetables, rotational crops, trained fruit including peach house, an orchard, wildlife habitats, a cut flower garden and other plant collections.

You will assist with the preservation, development and promotion of the gardens’ plant and historic heritage, and champion the gardens as a horticultural and educational visitor attraction. You will be expected to assist the gardens in increasing our visitor numbers through promotional activities and events as well as working directly with trainees, students and volunteers.

You should have relevant qualifications or experience in horticulture with a particular interest in the production of fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. A proven supervisory track record or experience in a historic garden/heritage site would be an advantage.

Successful candidates will be required to obtain a Disclosure Certificate from the Disclosure Barring Service, for which assistance will be given.
