Release date:
11 December 2024
2024 has been a momentous year for Lee Valley Regional Park Authority as we marked 10 years since two of our Olympic legacy venues opened to the public. It’s been a year in which we’ve shown that the spirit and sporting legacy from London 2012 continues to thrive.
We’ve hosted, cheered and celebrated the world’s best athletes, inspired and nurtured the next generation of sporting stars and, perhaps most important of all, thrown open our doors, boosted funding and increased our offering for the community groups that can most benefit from access to our world class venues and inclusive programmes.
Here’s just a few of our proud moments:
⭐ We celebrated 10 years since Lee Valley VeloPark and Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre opened to the public following the Games. More than nine million people have visited these two stellar venues, taking part in thrilling sports, watching international events and enjoying unforgettable experiences. To mark this milestone we hosted community open days with family friendly activities at heavily discounted prices, or for free!
⭐ As the only London 2012 venue to open before the Games, Lee Valley White Water Centre turned 13 this year, but we couldn’t leave it out of the celebrations! Over four million people have visited for adrenalin charged experiences, a host of paddle sports, major events and more! This summer’s Paddle Festival was a hit with seasoned paddlers, newbies and the local community.
⭐ This year our legacy venues welcomed the world’s best in a series of major sporting events – from the prestigious Federation of International Hockey Pro League at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre which drew 25,000 spectators across six sell out days and two school’s days for over 3,000 children, to the British Open at Lee Valley White Water Centre, in which Britain's best slalom and kayak cross paddlers (including some of our Olympic champions) battled it out for National titles. Lee Valley VeloPark hosted the inaugural 3 Day London and saw the return of the UCI Track Champions League Finale.
⭐ As we joined the rest of the world in cheering on the stars of Paris 2024 we had reason to feel particularly proud that several medal-winning athletes began their journeys in our venues. Friends and fellow athletes joined a Kayak Cross Watch Party at Lee Valley White Water Centre, to cheer on the team from their home training venue. The team delivered with two medals in the new Kayak Cross discipline – did we mention that we’re the only venue in the world to feature a permanent kayak cross starter ramp, giving Team GB the edge!
⭐ Our London 2012 venues were built for legacy, with 90% of their programmes dedicated to community, schools and clubs. We’ve funded thousands of experiences this year, providing opportunities for people from all backgrounds and abilities to try a variety of sport and activities on offer in the park. Our anniversary year competitions gave people yet more opportunities to experience sport at our venues.
Legacy doesn’t stand still and throughout the year we’ve been investing in our venues to keep them at the top of their game. Looking ahead to 2025 we’ve got more major events in the pipeline, continuous innovation and improvement and exciting new opportunities, offers and experiences – more on this soon!
