The eagerly anticipated Ultimate Snowdrop Sale is due to return to the award winning Myddelton House Gardens for its tenth year on Saturday 28 January 2023.
Hundreds of horticulturists, gardening enthusiasts and snowdrop collectors from far and wide are set to gather at the popular annual event in Enfield, north London, in hope of purchasing a range of beautiful, and in some cases, very rare, varieties of Galanthus bulb.
Heralded as one of the first signs of spring, Snowdrops are a small, white bell shaped winter flower that bloom as early as January or February, despite the weather.
Snowdrop fanatics will 'collect' different varieties of the plant, which can come in an array of different sizes, shapes, colours and even petal markings, with the rarest variants often fetching thousands of pounds at auction.
Head Gardener, Richard Harmes, said: ‘‘We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors from across the country to our tenth annual Ultimate Snowdrop Sale. Although historically some of the rarest snowdrop species swap hands for nearly £1,000, other varieties start from as little as £5 so there will be something to suit every budget and every garden.
“As well as browsing and purchasing a variety of snowdrops, visitors will be able to explore our Green Flag award winning gardens and admire the carpets of snowdrops spread out across our eight-acre site in the borders, beds and meadows”.
Myddelton House Gardens was the life long home of Edward Augustus Bowles, one of Britain’s most famous self-taught gardeners and an avid Snowdrop collector. He is credited with coining the term ‘galanthophile’ to describe a Snowdrop enthusiast. Fittingly, a very rare Snowdrop discovered at Myddelton House Gardens was named Galanthus plicatus ‘E A Bowles’, in his honour.
Myddelton House Gardens can be reached by train or bus. Car parking is free for those attending the sale. Admission to the event is £4 per person. Entry to the gardens only remains free of charge, but parking charges apply from 12.00.
