Befriending walks

Launching in February, Lee Valley’s Walking Befriending Service will provide volunteer befrienders to accompany visitors on short walks in our stunning open spaces.

This free service is designed to help people who would like to benefit from regular exercise but feel nervous going out by themselves.

Lee Valley would love to hear from you if you feel you could benefit from this service or if you would like to get involved as a volunteer befriender.

Reconnect with nature

Lee Valley is renowned for its diverse habitats that teem with wildlife. Head into the park this winter and you’ll discover plenty of feathered visitors from the illusive Bittern to overwintering ducks.

Our wildlife highlights include:

  • Bittern – it’s breeding time, listen for the males’ booming call to attract a mate

  • Overwintering ducks – we’ve had over 10,000 in previous years. Keep an eye out for Goosander, Smew and Goldeneye

  • Otter – they can be hard to spot at Seventy Acres Lake in River Lee Country Park but have a look

  • Kingfisher – watch out for the flash of cobalt blue as they skim over the water

  • Fieldfare and Redwing (winter thrushes) – they feed on the winter berries

  • Wigeon and Snipe – you’ll see them in wet grassland habitats
